Welcome to Braunton Academy Science Department. The Science Department has a dedicated and enthusiastic team of teachers, supported by an excellent technician. Together we aim to provide a varied and stimulating science curriculum, in which students are helped to develop the skills they need to become focused independent learners, through the exploration of all aspects of the science curriculum. During Key Stage 3 we focus on building students' scientific knowledge and developing their skills. We aim to inspire students and encourage them to develop an inquisitive approach to their science lessons. In Key Stage 3 students are assessed though ongoing assessment and levelled according to the National Curriculum standards. During Key Stage 4 students follow the AQA science course. This is tailored to suit students' individual needs, resulting in 1, 2 or 3 GCSE science grades. It should be noted that a significant number of students opt to choose to study the separate sciences at GCSE level, that is, Biology, Physics and Chemistry (Triple Science). Take a look at the downloads which gives more detail on the core, additional science and triple science programs.
Students will sit all science examinations in the June examination series of year 11. They will also complete a number of Controlled assessment units (CAUs) over the two years. These also contribute 25% to their final grades.
It should be noted that Science, Dual award science and Triple Science CGSE forms part of the new English Baccalaureate.
Homework; independent learning links for science
Homework is regularly set on the Show My Homework website and it is important that students access extra learning resources that are available on the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to extend their homework and aid their preparation for examinations and tests.
